Do I Need an Additional FaucetWhat Role Does the Faucet Play in My Water Filter System?

For anyone considering the purchase of a premium water filter system, another question inevitably arises: What about the faucet? If you haven’t delved deeply into the topic of water filters before, this point might come as a surprise. A comprehensive filtration and purification process can only achieve optimal results if all factors are taken into account. The journey of pure drinking water doesn’t end with the system itself but continues until you get the water from your faucet. So, does the faucet affect water quality? Do you need a new faucet? What is a 3-way faucet? How useful are faucet-mounted filters? We’ll explore these questions in this blog post to help you understand the complex topic of water filters better.

Does the Tap affect my Water Quality?

Basically, every component in the water cycle can potentially introduce contaminants— and the faucet is no exception. Unlike components installed before the water filter, the faucet can allow new contaminants into the water even after the filtration and purification process, which could affect the water quality. A similar issue can occur with water filters installed at the main water supply, where the pipes in your home could affect the water quality. Therefore, especially for components that come into contact with water after filtration, it’s advisable to use high-quality materials—such as stainless steel. Ideally, your filtered drinking water should have a closed system to minimize the risk of post-filtration contamination.

Do I Need an additional Tap?

No, you generally don’t need an additional faucet if you install a water filter. However, it can be beneficial to replace your existing faucet, especially with reverse osmosis systems. Premium water filter systems based on reverse osmosis effectively remove all contaminants from your water, but your current faucet might introduce new—albeit minimal—contaminants into the purified water. To prevent this, you have options. You could install an additional faucet dedicated solely to filtered water, or alternatively, a 3-way faucet.

What is a 3-way-tap?

A 3-way faucet is a special type of faucet that allows you to connect multiple water sources to a single faucet. The name comes from its three connection options: usually cold water, hot water, and filtered water. This type of faucet is particularly useful if you want to access both your filtered pure water and regular tap water from one location without installing an additional faucet. Since the flow rate of filtered water is typically lower than that of regular tap water, having both options is often more convenient. For instance, you can get optimal drinking water while using regular tap water for other purposes. The 3-way faucet is designed to keep the different water flows separate. This is typically achieved by having an additional line integrated into the faucet that only carries your filtered water. The pure water then flows from a separate outlet, ensuring that filtered and unfiltered water do not mix.

Are Tap-Mounted Filters Useful?

This largely depends on your expectations for your drinking water. Faucet-mounted filters can improve water quality through mechanical filtration and/or ion exchange, but they won’t provide the highest quality drinking water. While these filters might seem like a convenient and cost-effective solution for cleaning your water, their compact size indicates they can’t offer a comprehensive filtration and purification process. If the quality of your drinking water is important to you and you want to give your body the best, we would recommend against purchasing such a faucet-mounted filter.
